Blog Journal #10

  As a prospective high school English teacher, data collection would definitely be convenient for gauging and improving students’ enjoyment of my class without the embarrassment that may come with non-anonymous in-class discussion. I’d use it to see which literary formats and genres students enjoy most, so that I can tailor some of the reading materials towards that. I’d also intermittently use data collection to see how well students are understanding the material, so that I can reshape my class as needed. I may also use it to ask students what classroom activities they’re most comfortable with, since some students have social anxiety that may make it difficult for them to participate in verbal class discussions, and they may have alternatives they prefer. It’s always interesting to me when my classmates are able to bring their own personal viewpoints and experiences to the discussion. I haven’t really enjoyed distance learning so much this semester. Zoom makes it difficult and awkward to interact with other students, and I’m in a few classes where class discussion is a key part of the course. I’m not sure how I’d combat this as a teacher, but cultivating a fun and engaging classroom environment would definitely be a priority for me. Something I like about distance learning is that I am able to go at more of my own pace with some classes. I have issues with auditory processing, so I prefer watching a video of a lecture, where I can pause and rewind as much as I want, to watching a lecture live. Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely-distributed resources that are licensed for reuse, remixing, and redistribution. OER are specifically created for use by teachers, and can include lesson plans, tests, syllabi, and other educational media.
